Today I am going to share two fun books about bugs. These books are so fun with a special time for us since Hazel's class has been focusing on bugs this year. The first book is Among a Thousand Fireflies by Helen Frost and photographs by Rick Lieder.

The words of this book are a poem. It is about a female firefly looking for her mate. The poem shares the courtship that happens between fireflies and how mates can find each other amongst the thousands of other fireflies around at night. After the poem is a page that explains the courtship of fireflies and other information. The photographs in this book are amazing. The close ups of the fireflies is just intense. The photographs make the words seem to really come alive.

This is a beautiful book that shows so much about these interesting bugs. I remember being a child and catching them at night and putting them into jars and using the jar as a nightlight in our camper. In the morning I was always terrified of the ugly bugs that were in the jars. Without their lights they are rather ugly or at least were to a young girl. There are even photographs that show this kind of look of the bugs. For some firefly crafts check out the series I did a few years ago.

The second book is Stories from Bug Garden by Lisa Moser and illustrated by Gwen Millward. This story tells about a forgotten garden or at least forgotten by humans. The bugs move in and have wonderful stories. The story is broken into stories about various bugs. As the story goes on the reader realizes the bugs are like a family to each other.  The tales are funny and include things like the horsefly acting like a horse. The big show of the season is like our fireworks but for the bugs it is the flowers blooming. This book takes the reader to a place where nature is important. The end of the book shares that the garden is not forgotten, but rather it is home to these bugs.

The illustrations are simple yet colorful and shows the action of these adorable bugs. Some of the stories are sweet and some are funny. It is a wonderful book that we really enjoy. I am going to bring it in to read to her class as mystery reader later today. I know it will be perfect with the science units they have done this year. It brings a fun twist to looking at bugs.

I hope you will check out and enjoy these fun books. Then of course go on a bug hunt!!
